Name the White Whale

A beautiful white whale calf was spotted in the Whitsundays this winter. News coverage of this very special creature, photographed splashing around the warm waters of the Whitsundays, made headlines all over the world. Since we hope to see the new white whale in the Whitsundays every winter on its annual migration, we think it needs a name...

It's a boy! And we've named him Chalkie

The baby white whale spotted in the Whitsundays in September has officially been named ‘Chalkie’, following a competition run by Tourism Whitsundays and Whitsunday Escape to name the baby. 743 entries were received over the two week competition period, with 599 unique (and creative!) name suggestions making the judges’ job particularly tough.

Want to know more about the significance of the name and it's double meaning, and who the lucky winner was who entered "Chalkie" in the name the baby whale competition? Read more here

The prize

The winner, who not only gets to name this beautiful baby whale, will win a fabulous skipper yourself sailing holiday prize, A Whitsunday Escape Seawind 1160, the type of vessel you could be sailing if you win this prize

generously donated by Whitsunday Escape. The prize consists of a 5 night, skipper yourself bareboat sailing holiday in the Whitsundays, departing from beautiful Airlie Beach. The vessel is a 38 foot sailing catamaran, on a vessel such as the Seawind 1160, which comfortably sleeps 5. No formal qualifications are required to enjoy a bareboat sailing holiday, but some experience is an advantage. It helps if you have a bit of navigating and anchoring experience. A sail guide will be provided for 2 days to the winner, if required, so that they can familarise themselves with the boat and brush up on their boating skills as well. Flights or transport to the Whitsundays, accommodation outside of the charter period and provisioning for the vessel are the responsibility of the winner. See here for the full terms and conditions.

What's a skipper yourself bareboating holiday?

It's where you hire a boat, you drive it yourself, you fill it with your friends or family, and you plot the course you will take over the next several days and nights. You have the boat all to yourselves, and you get to decide where you go, where you anchor, what you do during the day. It's the ultimate freedom on the water, and has been described as quite similar to a caravanning holiday, as you have the same kind of freedom over your itinerary and the company you keep. It's a fabulous way to see the beauty of the Whitsundays! Find out more about skipper yourself sailing holidays here.
