A Heavenly Culinary Experience in The Whitsundays

Earlier this year, I was lucky enough to spend five days in the Whitsundays with Tourism Whitsundays, I was there to photograph, highlight and share my experiences, particularly of the local restaurants along the way.

Our trip began with an overnight stay on Hamilton Island, this is my second time visiting the island and it’s really one of those places where you can step off a plane and automatically feel relaxed. There is a really strong community feel which gives you an assurance of being able to switch off a little and enjoy your time.

Our lunch was at (the very Instagrammable) Manta Ray which was a great opportunity to sit outside and look over Hamilton Island Marina while sharing a few pizzas, seafood and cocktails.

In the evening we headed to Bommie Restaurant situated in Hamilton Island Yacht Club. If you’re there to celebrate a special occasion and looking for a restaurant with a spectacular view, this is the spot. Everyone at the table loved the menu at this Contemporary Australian restaurant - a stand-out venue.

Before heading off the next day, we had a quick lunch at The Beach Club restaurant on Catseye beach - I love the vibe here, it feels like a beach lounge - the perfect place for an afternoon drink.

The next few days were spent at Airlie Beach. There was one restaurant I was hoping would be on our itinerary - and it was! I had heard quite a lot about Walter’s Lounge from online reviews, so I wanted to check it out for myself - Such a great little restaurant. They have nailed the share plate concept with some real memorable dishes including the Sumac Chicken Breast, Cape Grim Striploin beef and their cured salmon. Interesting wine list too!

The next day we made a day trip up to Bowen, If you ever head up to Bowen make sure you stop at Bowen Fisherman’s Seafood Company by the marina. It is a family owned and operated seafood wholesale business that also runs ‘Bird’s Fish Bar’ out the back serving their freshly caught daily seafood - Think Bugs, Tiger Prawns, Barramundi, Coral Trout and Spanish Mackerel - Unreal!

While I was in the Whitsundays I was also fortunate enough to go out Sailing with the #Gobareboating group.

Bareboating is a fantastic experience as you can go where the mood - and tides - take you with no set itinerary! And of course, sailing in the Whitsundays is an absolute joy with the calm, protected waters, numerous anchorages and countless secluded beaches to discover.

I would also like to mention Charlie - I've now sailed with him on two separate occasions and he is the perfect guide for bareboating around the Whitsundays with his knowledge and experience.

Our final night on Airlie beach was a special one. We had Kev Collins, the owner of the local Institution Fish D’Vine come over to our apartment to cook a memorable feast for us in our kitchen. Kev is a long-time fisherman and passionate chef and also just an awesome guy. His knowledge of the area and local produce gave us a true insight - A huge thanks to Kev if you’re reading this!

We have all seen the images of The Whitsundays - The Great Barrier Reef and the pristine waters. However, there is so much more on offer, especially when you start chatting with the locals! I look forward to returning next year.
