The Whitsundays…an adventure waiting to happen!

The Whitsundays is an adventure just waiting to happen – all you have to bring is a sense of wonder and a willingness to jump right in!
The Whitsundays is quite literally in the heart of the World Heritage Listed Great Barrier Reef and you can swim, snorkel, dive, sail and fly when experiencing the world’s largest living structure in the wonderful Whitsundays.

With 74 tropical islands dotting the Coral Sea - and the protection of the Great Barrier Reef, meaning calm sheltered waters - the Whitsundays is a sailing haven. From eco tours on romantic old tall ships, to adventure sailing on ex America’s Cup racing yachts, you can choose your sailing experience in this island paradise. You’re spoilt for choice with one, two and three-night itineraries taking in everything the Whitsundays’ aquatic playground has to offer – and exciting day trips too, if you’re tight for time. Who doesn’t want to take off on an adventure and find secluded beaches and dive into the marvelous underwater world?

The Whitsundays has everything worth bragging about! It’s an instagrammer’s heaven with some of the most iconic natural landscapes in Australia, including Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet. The sparkling, pristine Whitehaven Beach is often voted one of the top beaches in Australia and the world, and the 7kms of pure white, silica sand will take your breath away. At the northern end of the beach is Hill Inlet, a stunning, swirling fusion of colours created by the sand meeting the sea as the tide comes in and out and best viewed from the lookout. There is a wide choice of day trips to Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet and most overnight sailing trips also stop by. You’ll understand why we aren’t afraid to brag when you see it with your own eyes!

…over the Great Barrier Reef for one of the most magical and memorable experiences of your life – not to mention bragging rights! You will be mesmerised by the expanse of blue that stretches before you, with the reef disappearing into the horizon, and the horizon merging into the sky. You can also fly over the most photographed reef in the world, Heart Reef, a natural heart-shaped formation that has stirred many a declaration of love and can only be seen in the Whitsundays. Sound like a dream? It is! We promise you, a scenic flight in the Whitsundays won’t disappoint.

Part of the wonder of snorkeling is the marine life you come up against…and in the Whitsundays, this is pretty awesome, with the Great Barrier Reef home to more than 1,500 species of fish alone. You will also swim amongst maori wrasse, angel, parrot and clown fish and those little silver fish that dart around in shoals! The reef is also home to turtles, dolphins, dugongs, manta rays and giant clams - so keep your eyes peeled. Don’t forget to take your underwater camera for a selfie with a gorgeous colourful fish!

If you want to learn a new skill while in the Whitsundays, then opt for a boat trip that includes diving. Look for tours offering introductory dives with a qualified instructor. The sense of wonderment when you are floating along is like nothing else – you feel weightless and free as you mix it with the marine creatures and glide over intricate coral gardens swaying beneath you. It’s not often we get the chance to really live in the moment, so make it count and dive the Great Barrier Reef in the Whitsundays!

…good about yourself and do something to help the environment, and the planet. Eco Barge Clean Seas is a Whitsundays charity that sends barges out to the islands to clean up what others have left behind. They go out laden with volunteers and come back laden with marine debris - things that could have harmed our wildlife. Pay it forward, as they say, and help save a turtle’s life.
