The Whitsundays - Excitement, Magic & the Best Stories

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with tropical islands. I mean, I grew up in Newcastle, so I was no stranger to a good beach, but there was something about islands and reefs and the azure blue ocean that always completely captivated me.  Up until I was 10 years old, my family never really went on holidays as the argument always was “there’s the beach over there”, “there’s the cricket nets over there” and “there’s Agro’s Cartoon Connection on the TV” over there”, so I would always return to school after the Christmas or Easter break and be a complete sponge for the stories that the other kids would come back with from their trips to Vanuatu, Hawaii, Disneyland and yes, the Whitsundays… and I would just be in complete awe of their experiences.  To go one step further, I remember I had a pen pal in Scotland when I was in Grade 3 with whom I would trade pictures of “where we lived”.  She, of course, had castles and lochs and all that cool stuff, and I – almost wishfully thinking – would respond with a picture of the Great Barrier Reef, complete with islands covered in Cuban Royal Palms.  It was never where I actually was of course, but it was where I wanted to be.

Time went by, and one day the coolest thing happened.  My Mum came home and handed me a book that she’d picked up from the travel agent with, “The Whitsundays” plastered all over the front of it.  Upon handing it to me, she said, “We’re going to go to the Whitsundays, find an island you like and that’s where we’ll go.”  Man, I read that thing cover to cover 100 times over.  The ink at the borders of each page was wearing off from my fingerprints, and I tallied up all the things I liked most about each island and resort as I pained over my decision.  It came down to 2… Hayman and Daydream.  The outdoor cinema and 5km/hr glass bottom jet skis got Daydream Island over the line, but the biggest thrill of it all was that win, lose or draw, my dream of going to the reef and visiting the islands was becoming a reality.  It was awesome; I was buzzing from start to finish and at the end of it all… I was finally the guy coming back from school holidays with some cracking stories for the wide-eyed kids in my class to sit and be amazed by.

So you’re probably thinking at this point, “thanks for the life story Alex, what’s the point?”. Well after another amazing trip to the reef it's not just photos and novelty Nemo souvenirs that I’m taking back to Brisbane with me, I’m also carrying a spark of excitement that the Whitsundays that I always dreamt about and eventually got to experience as a child, still has all of its magic and then some.  It’s still the islands, the azure blue water, the white sands of Whitehaven, the Cuban royal palms and the living natural wonder that is the reef – but it’s also the fantastic nature of the people and the constant feeling around town that says loud and clear, “you have 1 option here – be happy, because why wouldn’t you be?”
