Alivia's Top 5 Favourite Things to do in the Whitsundays

Greetings! I’m Alivia, a travel photographer and lifestyle blogger based in Portland, Oregon, USA! I recently had the opportunity to visit the land down under for the first time and wow, I am in awe! While I was able to journey throughout Melbourne and Sydney and everywhere in between, my favorite part of the excursion was my visit to the Whitsundays. Staying in the incredible little town of Airlie Beach, my friend Michael and I were right in the center of all the fun! That said, I’ve decided to write out my top five favorite things to do in the Whitsundays... here we go!

1. Sunrise walks along the beach.

— We enjoyed a lovely stay at the bright and minimalistic Heart Hotel and Gallery Whitsundays, which offers a gorgeous balcony view of the ocean. Every morning I would see a multitude of colors begin to paint the sky, and I couldn’t help but throw on some shoes and run outside to watch the sun rise along the horizon line! With tons of palm tree lined paths to choose from, a sunrise walk along the ocean blue is definitely a mood booster for the day ahead! Heart Hotel and Gallery Whitsundays is in the perfect central location, and walkable to everything, so I would definitely recommend staying here if you’re in town! Views are 10/10.

2. A drive around town with Whitsunday Mustangs.

— If you have never driven a 1965 classic Ford Mustang convertible, I would highly recommend! This little excursion was by far one of my favorite experiences of the entire trip (and potentially in my lifetime!). Whitsunday Mustangs offers a cool opportunity to cruise around Airlie Beach, whilst they show you all the sights to be seen...even some hidden gem spots! With the top down and wind in your hair, this will surely be a drive to remember! Speaking of driving, you can totally take the wheel yourself and cruise! This was my first time driving on the right side of the car, and the left side of the road, which was soo confusing, but super hilarious and fun! So if I, an inexperienced American can do it, you can too! Next time you find yourself in the Whitsunday Islands, Whitsunday Mustangs is surely a must!

3. Must do scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef.

— Have you ever wanted to soar over the Great Barrier Reef and see if you can spot Nemo and the gang? If the answer is yes, I highly recommend a scenic flight adventure with GSL Aviation. Located at the Whitsundays airport right in Airlie Beach, this is such an easy and beautifully fun activity for anyone. As a photographer, it was definitely such a cool opportunity to experience and capture the Queensland coastline and the Great Barrier Reef from a whole different perspective. With an hour of flying over stunning blue waters and the infamous Whitehaven Beach, this excursion will not disappoint! I had wide eyes and a smile on my face the entire flight, and probably said “woah” and “wow” way too many times! All that to say, if you only get to do one thing in the Whitsundays, this is it!

4. Dinner at The Deck.

— VEGAN. PIZZA. Ok, I may be a little too excited about this place! Our first night in the Whitsundays we had dinner at The Deck, located right underneath the Heart Hotel and Gallery Whitsundays. With a nice open air waterfront view and impeccable service, this was such a wonderful introduction to the Whitsundays and easily our favorite meal of the trip! Mike had the steak (which he said was incredible by the way) and I had the vegetable pizza, which they happily made vegan for me! Seriously, best vegan pizza of my life right here! Oh, we also got sorbet for dessert and I think Mike had some chocolate cake too? Haha needless to say, we couldn’t get enough of the incredibly tasty food at The Deck! Some other restaurants and cafe’s we really enjoyed were the Fat Frog Cafe (get the avo toast!), Anchor Bar (which offers a beautiful ocean view for sunset), and we even had the chance to have a catered picnic lunch from Peach and Pear catering (so easy for a day out on the beach so you don’t have to worry about packing yourself.) All in all, the Whitsundays have some fantastic food options and I’ll be thinking about all the smoothies I had for a very long time to come!

5. Snorkeling in the ocean blue!

— Remember when I asked if you wanted to spot Nemo and the gang along the Great Barrier Reef? How about swimming with them?! For our last day in the Whitsundays, we decided to take a day cruise around the islands to beach hop and snorkel with the fishies! We spent the day on the lovely Camira boat and it was such a relaxing day full of sunshine, ocean air, and good vibes. The Camira crew is such a fun bunch and they made sure we all were safe and sound when in water and on land! Snorkeling and diving into the ocean surrounded by beautiful coral and fish below was definitely a memory of a lifetime, and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity! So if you’re looking for a boating extravaganza, look no further than the Camira, via Cruise Whitsundays!

OK, are you obsessed with the Whitsundays yet, or is that just me?! Thanks so much for taking the time to read; I hope you caught a glimpse of our precious time in this gorgeous little gem in Queensland. If you end up going, or if you have been there before, let me know some things that you liked to do, so I can add it to my list! Until next time, keep on creating!
