Why Bowen needs to be on your Whitsundays wish-list

Why Bowen needs to be on your Whitsundays wish-list

When it comes to visiting the world-famous Whitsundays, the charming town of Bowen is a must-do. The picturesque seaside town, also known at the 'Top of the Whitsundays', brims with understated charm. From award winning palm fringed beaches to beautiful bays and the most delicious seafood you've ever tasted, Bowen has something for everything.

Here are some suggestions for what you can see and do in beautiful Bowen.

Drop in to the Big Mango Visitor Centre and venture to Flagstaff Hill

Your first stop of the trip is the award-winning Big Mango Visitor Information Centre. A tourism drawcard for Bowen and located just south of Bowen on the Bruce Highway, this iconic gem is a great opportunity for that perfect family holiday snapshot. Enjoy some mango sorbet while you chat to the amazing volunteers at the centre who are always happy to share advice and tips to ensure your Bowen holiday is one to remember. Bowen has an abundance of amazing photo opportunities, and Flagstaff Hill is no exception. Providing a commanding picture-perfect view of the surrounding Whitsundays, Flagstaff Hill is accessible by car and offers views that will have you in complete awe. For another great vantage point, you can't go past Grays Bay Lookout, which also provides stunning views.

Beautiful bays

Bowen is renowned for its beautiful bays and beaches. If your kind of holiday involves venturing to some of the most secluded and mesmerizing beaches, then Bowen is a must. One of Bowen's most treasured features is Horseshoe Bay, a beautiful, secluded beach you will never want to leave. Home to crystal clear waters, the sheltered sandy bay is also home to easily accessible fringing reef for those who love to snorkel. Bowen's bays are also perfect for swimming, sailing and scuba diving so there are options to suit every interest and age group. While you're holidaying in Bowen, make sure you stop by the beautiful Rose Bay. This sheltered slice of paradise is tucked away from the crowds and once you get there you will understand why the locals rave about this amazing spot.

Revel in the scrumptious food

Bowen is filled with amazing restaurants and local cafes. You'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to food. For some of the best seafood you've ever tasted, Birds Fish Bar at the Marina is a must-try. Enjoy a delicious seafood platter overlooking boats on the marina with a beer in hand. It's as picturesque as you can get! Le Sorelle The Sisters Coffee House & Florist is renowned for its homemade fudge and coffee which you can grab your way to explore Bowen's beautiful beaches. Their breakfast and lunch menu is very extensive so there is something for everyone. For a hearty dinner, make sure to stop in at the Grand View Hotel, Bowen's local pub that has been family owned since 1919. Frequented by locals and tourists alike, the pub has a beautiful ambience, friendly service and great cuisine. While having undergone a modern makeover, it manages to retain its rustic old charm and heritage, a major reason Baz Luhrmann's famous Hollywood film 'Australia' was filmed at across the road from the tavern in a replica purpose-built for the set in 2007. Of course, the cast and crew enjoyed many nights at the Grand View Hotel after a busy day filming.

After all the fun and adventure, rest assured, you will have plenty of accommodation options to choose from to rest up. From caravan parks such as Queens Beach Tourist Village to luxury beachside apartments found at Coral Cove or Rose Bay Resort, and everything in between. Bowen truly is one of the Whitsundays best-kept secrets, offering memorable getaway in paradise.
