About Airlie Beach, the Heart of Fun

The tropical resort town of Airlie Beach is the mainland hub of The Whitsundays.

To one side the coastline is bordered by the Great Barrier Reef and Whitsunday Islands offering stunning views of the Coral Sea and to the other the rich, rainforest-clad hills of the Conway National Park.

WHAT TO DO IN AIRLIE BEACH

The main street of Airlie Beach is filled with delicious restaurants, lively bars, and specialty shops. The dining scene here features the fresh seafood and produce that is in abundance throughout the region. Visitors can enjoy a delicious meal prepared with fresh local ingredients at one of the many restaurants that line the main street or party the night away at the bustling bars and pubs of Airlie Beach.

The Whitsundays offers a variety of shops, with many stores having their own distinct style. Jewellery, homewares, artworks and Indigenous artefacts are all to be found, as well as fashions, food and fun things for the kids. Not surprisingly, the Airlie Beach Main Street is also dotted with souvenir shops with colourful swimwear, sarongs, sandals and sunhats.

The Airlie Beach Lagoon is the perfect place to kick off your tropical adventure. This massive swimming pool is surrounded by sandy beach areas and grassy knolls, all located within close distance of the main street of Airlie Beach. It features a children's splash pool, playground equipment, and several barbeque facilities and amenity blocks situated throughout the Lagoon's parklands; the Lagoon offers families and couples the opportunity to can sit, relax, and soak up the blissful holiday vibes this town offers.

Just a short stroll from the lagoon, on the Airlie Beach foreshore, you will find more barbeque facilities and a new children's playground standing 10.5m high. Enjoy the sand, sea and spectacular views from Boathaven Beach, just a short stroll from the lagoon and main street.

Meander along the Bicentennial Boardwalk to Cannonvale Beach, taking in the magnificent views across the Coral Sea, where lucky visitors may have the opportunity to spot a dugong or turtle. There is also the added bonus of coffee stops available along the way.

If you are keen to take in this stunning landscape by air, with many wanting to experience the beauty of Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet, The Great Barrier Reef, and Heart Reef from a birds-eye-view a number of scenic flight operators take off from the mainland.

Fishing is also a favoured pastime of our local residents, with Lake Proserpine crowned the barramundi mecca of Queensland, or try some big game fishing out on the open water.

For those who prefer to remain on the mainland why not check out the great land-based activities on offer. Check out crocodiles in the wild, take a tuk-tuk ride through Airlie Beach or see the lush rainforest of our National Park via Segway!

For keen adventurers, only 10 minutes from the main street is Shute Harbour, once second to Sydney’s Circular Quay as the busiest commuter port in Australia. However, these days it is a great spot for lovely views, to take a tour from or enjoy a walk to Coral Beach or if you want something more challenging, try Mount Rooper.
