The inaugural Whitsundays Arts Festival 3-5 October on the Airlie Beach Foreshore is a grand celebration of our creative community and inspiring environment. A line-up of musicians, many local along with some from interstate, will take the stage on Saturday 3 October at 4 until 10pm, Sunday from 10am to 9pm and Monday from 10am to 1pm. Suspended flying fish created from recycled materials by Atherton Tablelands GhostNet artist Sue Ryan and local artists will illuminate Fairy Tree Park. The magnificent trees in the park will be decorated with woven circles made from recycled crab pots by local artists under the guidance of renowned Townsville fibre artist Marion Gaemers. Schoolchildren from Bloomsbury to Collinsville, Bowen, Cannonvale and Proserpine will make lanterns to parade on opening night lead by performers from Melbourne group DrumOut. Public workshops for the general community in lantern making will be held on 28 and 29 September. Children are invited to make drums from recycled materials in sessions lead by Melbourne drummer Collin Boggarts and perform on the beach on Saturday in a choreographed drumming parade. Workshops in many mediums including photography, spray art, fabric dying, weaving and painting will be held on site and handmade markets and an arts hub will guarantee an unforgettable festive seaside event. An exhibition of wearable art will be open from Friday to Monday 3-5 October.
