A Walk to Bowen's Lighthouse

A Walk to Bowen's Lighthouse

A Walk to Bowen's Lighthouse

A few times a year, during the winter months, Bowen’s daytime tides are low enough for visitors to walk to North Head Island and Queensland’s third oldest lighthouse. This unique experience takes walkers on a beautiful journey that not only celebrates the history of Bowen, but also the wonderful array of sea life that inhabits the shores of the bay. We asked one of our visitors to describe their first Walk to the Lighthouse.

The day of the Walk to the Lighthouse dawns bright, balmy and shimmering blue as only the waters in the Whitsundays can. We are excited for this afternoon, but make the most of our short stay in Bowen to explore the beautiful beaches and enjoy lunch at the spectacular Grand View Hotel. The balmy winter weather is perfect for enjoying the outdoor dining area and gazing into the bay. The wind has dropped completely by lunchtime and the glassy water reflects the islands dotted across the water.

So, the question has been popped, you’ve got the beautiful bling on your finger and you’ve started the hunt for your big day inspiration. You’re scrolling through the internet, skimming through pages of wedding magazines and picture after picture is always of one super-smiley bride, bare-foot, wind-swept and flower adorned hair, posing on a pristine beach with the ocean and clear blue sky as her back-drop. A destination wedding: who hasn’t fantasized about it? However if the mere mention of saying your “I do’s” in a far-off idyllic place instils concerns of logistical disasters, guest-list dilemmas, sky-high stress and ski-high cost and “isn’t it too luxurious for the average-Joe couple” apprehension, get ready to think again!

We’ve put our heads together and set our sights on kicking these misconceptions to the curb. Intrigued? We are true advocates for the destination wedding and have put together 10 fabulous reasons why you should choose to pack your bags and jet-set off to somewhere truly special to get hitched (we reckon you’ll love them too):

The Whitsundays - Excitement, Magic & the Best Stories

heart-reef-whitsundays

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with tropical islands. I mean, I grew up in Newcastle, so I was no stranger to a good beach, but there was something about islands and reefs and the azure blue ocean that always completely captivated me.  Up until I was 10 years old, my family never really went on holidays as the argument always was “there’s the beach over there”, “there’s the cricket nets over there” and “there’s Agro’s Cartoon Connection on the TV” over there”, so I would always return to school after the Christmas or Easter break and be a complete sponge for the stories that the other kids would come back with from their trips to Vanuatu, Hawaii, Disneyland and yes, the Whitsundays… and I would just be in complete awe of their experiences.  To go one step further, I remember I had a pen pal in Scotland when I was in Grade 3 with whom I would trade pictures of “where we lived”.  She, of course, had castles and lochs and all that cool stuff, and I – almost wishfully thinking – would respond with a picture of the Great Barrier Reef, complete with islands covered in Cuban Royal Palms.  It was never where I actually was of course, but it was where I wanted to be.

With its clear blue waters, soft sand, tall palm trees, the Whitsundays is a true paradise in Australia. It’s composed of 74 islands bordered by the Great Barrier Reef, located in Queensland, the tropical Northern part of Australia. Many of the beaches here have been named as some of the best beaches in the entire world. It's been on my bucket list of places to visit ever since coming to Australia last time, so I was really excited for the getaway here and relax during the three days we were here for.

Sir Elton John… A Dream Come True!

For as long as I can remember I have enjoyed the sound of Elton John’s voice across the stereo. My earliest memory was being 9 years old and listening to Candle in the Wind performed for Diana, England’s Rose, a song that still brings tears to my eyes; the happy memories of Circle of Life from the Lion King; not to mention the favourites of Tiny Dancer and Blue Eyes. Living in the Whitsundays, I did not think my opportunity to hear Elton John live would be anywhere outside of the big smoke. But on the 22nd of September, I had the opportunity to be out, under the stars just south of the Whitsundays to hear Elton John perform live to an audience of 15,000 fans. He played all the favourites, along with a few newbies. We sipped wine and enjoyed being outdoors for a concert that was a dream come true. What a night!
