Greetings! I’m Alivia, a travel photographer and lifestyle blogger based in Portland, Oregon, USA! I recently had the opportunity to visit the land down under for the first time and wow, I am in awe! While I was able to journey throughout Melbourne and Sydney and everywhere in between, my favorite part of the excursion was my visit to the Whitsundays. Staying in the incredible little town of Airlie Beach, my friend Michael and I were right in the center of all the fun! That said, I’ve decided to write out my top five favorite things to do in the Whitsundays... here we go!

9 places to fall in love under the falls this Valentine’s Day

on January 23, 2018 at 3:00 pm

In Queensland, Valentine’s Day is at the end of summer. Coincidentally, that may be why the term “having the hots for someone” was invented. But we digress.

While the weather may be perfect for beach dates, romantic road trips (with the top down) and all things adventure, it can get stinking hot. We’re talking upwards of 40 degrees in some places. Ouch!

The Whitsundays - Excitement, Magic & the Best Stories

heart-reef-whitsundays

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with tropical islands. I mean, I grew up in Newcastle, so I was no stranger to a good beach, but there was something about islands and reefs and the azure blue ocean that always completely captivated me.  Up until I was 10 years old, my family never really went on holidays as the argument always was “there’s the beach over there”, “there’s the cricket nets over there” and “there’s Agro’s Cartoon Connection on the TV” over there”, so I would always return to school after the Christmas or Easter break and be a complete sponge for the stories that the other kids would come back with from their trips to Vanuatu, Hawaii, Disneyland and yes, the Whitsundays… and I would just be in complete awe of their experiences.  To go one step further, I remember I had a pen pal in Scotland when I was in Grade 3 with whom I would trade pictures of “where we lived”.  She, of course, had castles and lochs and all that cool stuff, and I – almost wishfully thinking – would respond with a picture of the Great Barrier Reef, complete with islands covered in Cuban Royal Palms.  It was never where I actually was of course, but it was where I wanted to be.

Best Things to Do in The Whitsundays

Blog post written by Molly Long

With its clear blue waters, soft sand, tall palm trees, the Whitsundays is a true paradise in Australia. It’s composed of 74 islands bordered by the Great Barrier Reef, located in Queensland, the tropical Northern part of Australia. Many of the beaches here have been named as some of the best beaches in the entire world. It's been on my bucket list of places to visit ever since coming to Australia last time, so I was really excited for the getaway here and relax during the three days we were here for.

Sir Elton John… A Dream Come True!

For as long as I can remember I have enjoyed the sound of Elton John’s voice across the stereo. My earliest memory was being 9 years old and listening to Candle in the Wind performed for Diana, England’s Rose, a song that still brings tears to my eyes; the happy memories of Circle of Life from the Lion King; not to mention the favourites of Tiny Dancer and Blue Eyes. Living in the Whitsundays, I did not think my opportunity to hear Elton John live would be anywhere outside of the big smoke. But on the 22nd of September, I had the opportunity to be out, under the stars just south of the Whitsundays to hear Elton John perform live to an audience of 15,000 fans. He played all the favourites, along with a few newbies. We sipped wine and enjoyed being outdoors for a concert that was a dream come true. What a night!

There’s a reef in the shape of a heart and you need to see it!

Born and raised in the island-paradise of the Torres Strait in Tropical North Queensland, Kantesha’s childhood is definitely envied by most. As an avid camper, adventurer and mum to her fur-baby Lara, she has pitched a tent in most of Queensland’s pet-friendly camping spots. And when she’s not camping, you can find her on a beach because as the saying goes; ‘you can take the girl off the island, but you can’t take the island out of the girl.’

Sailing La Vagabonde takes you to The Whitsundays

Have you ever imagined packing up your life, quitting your job, buying a yacht and sailing around the world? Yep, me too. And wouldn’t that be the life!
