Who owns Hamilton Island?

The story of Hamilton Island's transformation from grazing land to world-class destination.

The Oatley Family
Hamilton Island is owned by the Oatley family, one of Australia's most prominent business families. The late Bob Oatley, renowned Australian winemaker, yachtsman and philanthropist, acquired the island in 2003 and set about transforming it into one of Australia's most celebrated holiday destinations.

Bob Oatley first sailed past Hamilton Island as a young man and immediately recognised its potential. Under his leadership, the family reinvented and rejuvenated the island, guided by his vision of creating a destination anyone could enjoy. Today, his son Sandy Oatley serves as Chairman of Hamilton Island Enterprises and continues that legacy.
Investment and Development
Since acquiring the island, the Oatley family has invested more than $350 million into facilities and infrastructure.

Major developments include the award-winning luxury resort qualia, Hamilton Island Yacht Club and Villas, and the Hamilton Island Golf Club on neighbouring Dent Island.
Sailing Heritage
The family's passion for sailing runs deep. Their racing yacht Wild Oats XI won the Sydney to Hobart yacht race a record nine times, and this heritage is reflected in Hamilton Island's world-class marina and the annual Hamilton Island Race Week, one of Australia's premier sailing events held each August.
Early History
Before the Oatley family's ownership, Hamilton Island was developed by Keith Williams, who transformed the island from a grazing lease into a resort destination.

Williams gained government approval for the marina and resort construction in 1982, establishing the foundational infrastructure that the Oatley family has since elevated to world-class standard.
