Bowen Beaches

Bowen is home to eight incredible sandy tropical beaches surrounding the town, some with the best fringing reefs lying just a few metres offshore.

Spend hours enjoying the beach and exploring the famed granite outcrops of Horseshoe and Rose Bay or make your way to Kings Beach to experience views over Gloucester, Middle and Stone Islands. Check out Queens Beach for a leisure stroll, at 5km it is the longest beach in Bowen.

The Big Mango

When heading to Bowen, keep an eye out for the Big Mango, on the Bruce Highway just before you enter the town of Bowen. The Big Mango marks the Bowen Visitor Information Centre, a knowledgeable, friendly place to book all your Bowen accommodation and activities and an excellent source of information if you are planning to continue further north on your journey. Don’t forget to snap a pic with the mango and share on your socials with #lovewhitsundays and #visitbowen.

HOT TIP: Make sure to try out the local mango sorbet!

Walking Trails

One of the best ways to explore Bowen’s attractions and coastal scenery is via the many beautiful walking tracks and lookouts. From the wheelchair and stroller friendly track of Hanson Park to Horseshoe Bay, to the Cape Edgecumbe Walking Trail nature lovers will be impressed by postcard-worthy lookout views of the bays and beaches, whilst having the opportunity to see native wildlife up close.

Bowen’s premier lookout is Flagstaff Hill and a ‘must do’ whilst visiting Bowen; featuring a lookout tower and binoculars, it offers the best view in The Whitsundays.

Water Activities

Did you know you can walk off the beach and head underwater to explore the living reef? High tide times allow snorkelers to explore up into the rocks and swim among the bountiful fish life at Horseshoe and Murray Bays.

Head towards Airlie Beach and enjoy a day out on the water! From snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef to fishing around the Whitsunday Islands or lounging on Whitehaven Beach, there is a great range of activities available for everyone!

Holding the title of North Queensland’s oldest town, Bowen has a long, colourful history. Officially declared a town in 1861, the region’s history predates that by many years. Bowen Historical Museum is rated as one of the best museums in Queensland. Memorabilia and rare artifacts including shipwreck relics paint quite a story of the adventures of the town and its people.
