Travellers Tips
A Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPS) permit is required to fish. Purchase yours through the Queensland Government website before you arrive.
There is no closed barramundi season. Fish year-round. Early mornings and late afternoons are the most productive times on the lake.
Redclaw crayfish are in the lake too. Bring yabby traps if you have them. Crab pots are not permitted in freshwater.
Camping bookings are through Whitsunday Holiday Parks. Book ahead during school holidays and long weekends.

Where is Lake Proserpine?
Lake Proserpine, also known as Peter Faust Dam, is about 20 kilometres west of Proserpine. It is known for large barramundi, with some caught over 120 centimetres.
Do I need a permit to fish at Lake Proserpine?
If you are 18 or older, yes. You need a Stocked Impoundment Permit to line fish at Peter Faust Dam. Children and teenagers under 18 do not need one. Carry your permit with you while fishing.
Is there a closed season for barramundi at Lake Proserpine?
Peter Faust Dam is an exception to the usual east coast barramundi closure, so recreational fishing can continue from 1 November to 31 January. During that period, the limit is one barramundi per person, or two per boat with two or more people aboard. Check the current Queensland fishing rules before you go.
Is there camping at Lake Proserpine?
Yes. Whitsunday Holiday Parks manages unpowered bush camping for tents and caravans, with glamping also available. Facilities include bathrooms, showers, a kiosk, a boat ramp and pontoons. BBQs and picnic areas are in the day-use area.
What else can you do at Lake Proserpine besides fishing?
You can go boating, kayaking, sailing and swimming in permitted areas. Read the signs, watch for submerged trees and stay out of marked exclusion zones, including at least 200 metres from the dam wall where signed.
