Based in Airlie Beach with a spare day up your sleeve? Bowen is the easy change of pace.

Just 70km north of Airlie Beach, Bowen swaps the marina buzz for a slower stretch of coast: eight beaches, a working fishing harbour and headland lookouts you can drive straight to. There's no boat to catch and no schedule to keep. Leave after breakfast with your swim gear and a pair of walking shoes, and let the day fall into an easy loop, starting at the Big Mango on the way in, then Horseshoe Bay, the murals through town, lunch by the water, one more beach, and Flagstaff Hill as the sun goes down.

Horseshoe Bay, Bowen

Horseshoe Bay

Start at the beach that makes the drive worth it on its own accord. Horseshoe Bay is small and sheltered, cupped between granite headlands, with fringing reef close enough to reach straight off the sand. Pull on a mask and you're snorkelling within minutes; if you've left your gear at home, you can hire it from Horseshoe Bay Resort just back from the beach.

Come early, while the sun sits low and the water is glassy; make sure to wear a stinger suit between November and May. When you're ready to dry off, the Rotary Lookout track climbs the headland for a wider view along the coast.

Bowen Mural

Murals & The Main Street

Park once and explore on foot. Bowen's heritage murals are spread across the town centre and read like the place telling its own story: the old port days, the rhythm of the farming seasons, wartime connections and the local characters painted straight onto the walls. It's a shaded, unhurried wander between coffee stops.

If there's time before lunch, walk out to the Catalina Memorial on the foreshore. And if your day lands on a Sunday morning, the Hansen Park markets bring out local growers, fresh seafood and community stalls.

Bowen has eight beaches, and they all sit close to town. There's no rush to tick them off, just easy days moving between sand and sea.

The Working Harbour

By midday, make your way down to Bowen Boat Harbour. Bird's Fish Bar sits right behind the seafood co-op, with deck tables looking out over the marina and the fishing boats coming and going. The Bauer family has been landing seafood here for decades, and in 2025 Bird's was voted the best fish and chips in Queensland.

Order the local wild-caught fish and chips and eat them in the sea air with the harbour in front of you. If you'd rather stay in town, the Grand View Hotel is the easy heritage-pub alternative.

Queens Beach, Bowen

One More Beach, Then The Hill

Spend the afternoon on whichever beach you haven't reached yet. Rose Bay is the natural next stop for more shore snorkelling, Queens Beach offers calm shallows and room to stretch out, and Murray Bay or Grays Bay reward a slower, quieter wander.

Save Flagstaff Hill for last. A short drive takes you to the top, where the view opens a full 360 degrees across the town, the harbour, Gloucester Island and the Coral Sea, just as the colour starts to drain from the sky.

Stay Longer In Bowen

If one day feels too quick, stay on and give yourself a second slow morning by the water. Horseshoe Bay Resort puts you steps from the snorkel, while NRMA Bowen Beachfront Holiday Park, Rose Bay Resort, Whitsunday Sands Resort, Queens Beach Tourist Village, Sky View Units and Whitsunday Holiday Parks – Queens Beach all sit within easy reach of the sand, harbour and lookouts.

MAKE A WEEKEND OF IT

Stay The Night.

An overnight changes the rhythm of Bowen. The day-trippers thin out by late afternoon, the main street quiets down and the beaches are close to empty come morning. Wake early and you can have the Horseshoe Bay snorkel almost to yourself, catch the sun coming up from Flagstaff Hill, or take a slow walk along the foreshore before the drive home.

Bowen adds something different to a Whitsundays trip: shore snorkelling, local produce, a working harbour, old Queensland streets and a sunset you can drive straight to.
